Welcome to Scoil Mhuire, Clarinbridge

Hello and welcome to Scoil Mhuire, Clarinbridge, where the Clarin River flows. When Mary Aikenhead, the foundress of the Irish Sisters of Charity, set up a convent and school in Clarinbridge in 1844, she probably did not realise that the Sisters would face such daunting challenges as posed by the Famine of 1845-1848. But they responded to the desperate needs of therir community, by helping those who suffered from hunger and disease, during those terribe years. Scoil Mhuire, names after Mary, the mother of Jesus, had quickly begun to answer its community's needs.

Feature Box

Today, this is still a school that aims to link closely and work with its community. For many years now Clarinbridge has been known nationally and internationally as the heartland of the Oyster Community. We are happy to reflect that link and indeed are proud to be involved in establishing and running our own Oyster Farm in the historic village of Cave. Thus the children learn by nurturing and caring for the young oysters that a community is a meitheal of people who share the same aims and goals and work together to achieve those goals. That is also what our school community is about.

So when the children of all ages visit the Oyster Farm; or create something special in Visual Arts or Music classes; or pull on the School Jerseys to represent us in hurling, camogie, football, soccer or other sports; when they stand together at Communion and Confirmation Ceremonies, or strive together in chess or quiz teams, or sing together in the National Children's Choir; or when they simply go out to play together on the spacious school grounds, they will do so with an awareness of the spirit of kindness, care and pride that we carry on from Mary Aikenhead's days.
